A true sign that a band has truly made an impact is when a musical subgenre is coined in order to describe them.
Brisbane, Australia's Experience Machines is such a band.
Heavily influenced by post-rock legends Mogwai and Sigur Ros, vocalist Josh Gurumarra began to look for like-minded individuals to jam with. He found them in Sam Mathison and Rachael Murphy. What happened next (Josh falling in love with keyboardist Megan Catrona at Megan's Slowdive cover band gig), changed their musical journey altogether. The group had combined their post-rock and shoegazer leanings into a new sound: post-gazer.
They gained a cult following in Australia and New Zealand with 2002's Patina and 2005's Look On And See With All Of This, but it was only after bassist Benjamin Mitchell and multi-instrumentalist Rhys Wiggers-Stank joined for their groundbreaking 2009 album, The Loudest Quiet. Ben and Rhys's love of all things RUSH, Yes, Jethro Tull and early Pink Floyd turned the Experience Machines into the post-prog-gazer beast of a group they are today.
